Visitor Review by Karin Holmes
This is the best resturant ever. Barry and his staff are brilliant, please try this resturant as the food is exceptional never been disapointed having been going for many years, last year went for Christmas day that was brillant , unsual but so tasty. Rating: Yellowfingers Review (Oct 2009): I was nearly talked into going to a new Italian restaurant on the evening we visited the Bangla Lounge but luckily my niece fancied a curry. “Where should we go”, we asked ourselves, and decided to try this restaurant opposite the Norman parish church in Halesowen town centre.
Its bright signage invited us in, and being a Monday night we had little problem acquiring a good table at the window, even though it was by no means empty.
Service was quick and waiters were polite and eager to please.
The whole restaurant is clean and modern with round tables and white tablecloths-oddly no salt and pepper on any tables this evening but you only have to ask.
The food is very very good here. My Onion Pakora starter was faultless, my Sisters sheek kebab similarly so.
My main of Chicken Tikka Dansak was simply superb, with a richness and depth of flavour that other local restaurants don’t come close to.
My Niece had a Tikka Massala, while, though not to my tastes, she thoroughly enjoyed.
The chips of all things, should be mentioned. Crispy, in a light batter I think while fluffy on the inside-something unique for this kind of eatery Absolutely gorgeous and were polished off even though the ample portions meant we were already quite full.
Better still are the prices . Sunday -Thursday is a buy two main courses get one free offer- worthwhile checking its still on as may be for a limited time only.
Not just recommended, but a ‘Must Visit’.

People say you always remember where you were when Elvis Presley died. Well, believe it or not -I was in Vakas! …or what was to become Vakas, anyway. It used to be my moms friends greengrocery shop where she had a job serving on Wednesdays back in the seventies. Nowadays its one of Colley Gates’ two long established Balti houses (The other being ‘Chinnar’, just down the road). It’s had a small recent refurbishment to make it more contemporary – new high-back chairs, trendy wood tables, you know the score. I have avoided it in recent times due to a visit around 10 years ago where a curry I had was very tomato based. I’m happy to report that my visit last night was better, a cheap and cheerful curry house with some main courses being? just over a fiver!. I had a Balti Chicken Tikka and Prawn (silver plated bowl- l like the old wok black style ones) and it was pretty good, nothing mind-blowing – just good. Not too tomatoey, a bit peppery, well cooked with plenty of prawns and chicken. My Onion Bhaji came in the flat Pattie stylie and was crispy, not too stodgy with an underlying spice heat. The Chappatis were crispy in places (a good thing in my book) and large enough for me to use as a scoop till my balti dish (silver plated….) was empty. There are friendly waiting staff who are happy to be of service and exchange polite banter with you. It’s never going to win any Michelin stars but who cares. A good example of a real style Balti house that has no big pretentions and you gets what you pays for. Its bright, relaxed and the piped asian music is not too loud (however if it too loud, your too old Its Unlicensed so take your own booze in. Rating: Chinnar Balti Tandoori Restaurant2007.03.08

We arrived for the popular Monday evening buffet, although my wife chose a dish from the main menu as there was no milder dish offered by the buffet. The restarant was absolutely rammed by 7pm which is always a good sign. The buffet starters were Vegetable Pakora which were good and crunchy, and Chicken Puree, with fluffy ‘puree’ bread, and spicy yet sweet chicken filling. This was so good I had two,and I was on my Christmas diet so I felt mega guilty afterwards. The Buffet main course was Balti Tropical and/or Chicken Jalfezi, and both of these were delicious. My wife had the Chicken Pakora starter, and a Balti Chicken Tikka Malaya, which was mild enough for her tastes and included various tropical fruits. It had been a long long time since my last visit to Chinnar, but I will definitely be returning again soon. Recommended. Unlicensed Rating: |
